Food Drive Organizer Honoured with REALTORSĀ® Care Award

Earlier this month, more than 32,000 pounds of food was collected as part of the 38th annual North Okanagan REALTOR® Food Drive. The efforts of the event organizer, Dawn Taylor, are being recognized by the Okanagan Mainline Real Estate Board through its REALTORS® Care Award.

Each year, the award is given to an OMREB Member in each of its three Zones who has contributed their community through volunteer work, financial support, or through sharing of expertise. Taylor is this year’s recipient for the North Okanagan Zone, though she is quick to acknowledge the hard work of others, including the hundreds of volunteers who help make the North Okanagan REALTOR® Food Drive a success each year.

“I love what I do, but I don’t do it for the awards,” said a humble Taylor.

Over the decades, the REALTOR® Food Drive has continued to grow and it has become the Food Bank’s single largest-day collection of food banks all year. This year marked the 38th year for the annual food drive and the event was the most successful yet. Taylor estimates that between 300 to 400 volunteers took part this year, canvassing neighbourhoods to collect food items, but colleagues know that Taylor herself puts in a significant amount of work behind the scenes.

“Dawn Taylor and I have done deals together and she is incredibly amiable and has been doing REALTOR® Food Drives for at least four years,” said Elspeth Manning, a REALTOR® with Sutton Group Lakefront Realty and a member of the REALTORS® Care nomination committee for the North Okanagan.

Manning explained the time and effort that goes into organizing the popular annual event, “That work includes organizing all the routes, arranging all the bag pickups, making sure that everyone has the correct information for the paperwork to be printed off and put into the bags, and tallying what the total tonnage of food is at the end. She also makes sure that it’s publicized locally, both pre and post, and works to get the publicity to drum up participation.”

Nominations for the REALTORS® Care Award are submitted by members of the public and from fellow OMREB Members through an online call for submissions. A Nomination Committee for each Zone then examines the nominations, looking at what the nominees have done and the impact on the committee. All nominations are kept private and the official announcement for the North Okanagan Zone was made at its AGM earlier this month.
