Animal-Loving Shuswap REALTORĀ® Recognized with REALTORSĀ® Care Award

A Shuswap REALTOR® has been recognized for her efforts to care for animals in need and give back to her community. On December 3rd, Tara Gallant with Royal LePage Access Real Estate was named the recipient of the Okanagan Mainline Real Estate Board’s 9th annual REALTORS® Care Award.

The Salmon Arm REALTOR® has been active in the local real estate market since 2004 and has served on the Shuswap Zone Executive Committee for the past eight years. In addition to her career as a REALTOR®, Gallant’s love of animals has found her fostering dogs and cats for an animal rescue group.

“Animals are my biggest downfall and they always seem to find me,” laughed Gallant.

Gallant and her husband have a large dog of their own and found their first experience with fostering rescue dogs to be ‘quite an adventure’. The small dogs kept Gallant, her husband, and their dog busy as they managed to find all of the smaller holes in their fencing.

“They were very adventurous and found every little hole that we didn’t know we had. When you have a large dog, you don’t realize that you have all these little exit holes in your yard until you bring a ‘foofoo dog’ home, so we had some adventures chasing them up and down the streets and through acreages and we met some neighbours I’d never met before as well, so that’s great.”

Fostering rescue dogs has been a highly rewarding experience for Gallant, who has enjoyed seeing the pets rehomed and keeping in touch with some of the dog’s new owners. In fact, the experience has been so rewarding and positive that Gallant and her family took in five different sets of dogs last year, including an “extremely high-energy” dog who was eventually rehomed to a beautiful ranch in Williams Lake. This experience then lead Gallant to her next adventure in the Shuswap community.

“Through that experience, I ended up getting involved with the Canadian Disaster Animal Recovery Team. It’s a pretty strong organization, but it’s new to the Shuswap so they’re just sort of getting started,” explained Gallant. “Through that, I got involved in the Emergency Support Services Program for the Columbia Shuswap Regional District, which is for two-legged humans.”

Many OMREB REALTORS® actively work to give back to the community, offering their time, expertise, and money to support local organizations and causes. While OMREB Members offer their time and resources and expect nothing in return, the REALTORS® Care Award acknowledges the work and efforts of these individuals within their region. Nominations for the award are submitted by fellow Members, as well as the community, through an online call for submissions.
